Man drowns near Waterplace Park in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A man drowned early Friday morning near Waterplace Park in Providence.

According to Providence police, a woman called police at about 3 a.m. reporting that she heard a man yelling nearby.

Police searched the area but couldn’t find anyone at first; they soon located the man in the river near the Citizens Bank building. Firefighters put a boat in the water and got the the man out, but by that point he was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said the man was not carrying any identification, but they do not suspect foul play in his death.
