Man charged with DUI after crashing SUV into police cruiser

PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) – Police are investigating after a man crashed an SUV into a police cruiser.

The crash occured at Arch Street and Elmwood Avenue just before 4 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to Providence police, the cruiser was traveling southbound at the intersection as the SUV was turning left. Police said that’s when the cars collided, leaving both vehicles with extensive damage.

The officer was treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said he’s facing several charges including driving under the influence and not having a license. Police have not yet released the driver’s name, but an Eyewitness News camera captured video of an Uber sticker on the windshield of the SUV that the driver was operating.

The crash remains under investigation.
