SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) – A man is accused of allegedly collecting unemployment benefits while being employed.

John Linehan, 49, of Smithfield pleaded nolo contendere Wednesday to one count of obtaining money under false pretenses.

Prosecutors say Lineham collected more than $24,000 in unemployment insurance benefits between January 2009 and February 2012, while working at Sitecon Corporation in Cranston, and failed to accurately report his weekly earnings to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.

The charge against Linehan was downgraded from a felony to a misdemeanor, because he paid $24,537 in restitution by the time of the plea.
