PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Incumbent Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee has won re-election, Eyewitness News projects.

McKee, a Democrat, defeated Republican Paul Pence, independents Ross McCurdy and Jonathan Riccitelli and Moderate Joel Hellmann.

A former mayor of Cumberland, McKee was elected lieutenant governor in 2014 following competitive races in the Democratic primary and the general election. In his first term, he has served as a top liaison to municipal leaders at the State House while also focusing on lowering energy costs for Rhode Island residents.

Facing a crop of candidates with low name recognition and little funding McKee was widely expected to cruise to re-election. He survived a close primary against state Rep. Aaron Regunberg, a progressive who ran to McKee’s left.

McKee will be term-limited in 2022.
