MATTAPOISETT, MASS. (WPRI) – A vigil will be held Friday night for two people killed in a tragic crash in Mattapoisett.

Brooklyn Cody Rodrigues, 21, and 18-year-old Meghan Sargent were killed after their car struck a tree on Fairhaven Road Monday night.

Rodrigues’ co-worker was driving behind them when they crashed.

“We got in our cars and said, ‘okay, see you later’ and unfortunately, later didn’t come,” said Kassandra Gonsalves.

Sargent was supposed to graduate from Fairhaven High School on Sunday.

Rodrigues’ former employer is holding the vigil at the Hollywood Scoop on Route 6 in Mattapoisett at 7 p.m. She is also planning a fundraiser on June 7. The proceeds from the fundraiser to be distributed evenly between the victims’ families.

“It’s great seeing that everyone is really stepping up and really kind of taking charge and supporting everything that we’re trying to do,” Gonsalves said.

Police are still investigating the exact cause of the crash, but say speed may have been a factor.
