Search called off for missing Coventry man

West Bay

Police tell Eyewitness News the search for an 81-year-old Coventry man has been suspended, after he was reported missing Wednesday.

West Greenwich police tell Eyewitness News, the search was called of late Friday afternon.

According to West Greenwich police, Frank Bergheimer’s car was found abandoned at a park-and-ride on New London Turnpike with the keys still in the ignition. Police said a note was left inside the car that read, “I’ll be back.”

Bergheimer was last seen wearing a blue windbreaker and a baseball hat Wednesday morning.

Bergheimer’s family told police they will continue to search for him on their own.

Police said they have yet to come across any successful leads.

“We have had leads from the Silver Alert, but those leads that we checked have not been truthful,” West Greenwich Police Chief Richard Ramsay said.

Ramsay said the Rhode Island State Police are assisting in the search. Police have dispatched drones, helicopters and K-9 units within a three-mile radius of where Bergheimer’s car was found since he was on foot when he left.

If you have any information on his whereabouts, please contact West Greenwich Police.
