Police: Prison guard let inmate use cellphone in exchange for gift card

West Bay

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A correctional officer at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) was arrested Thursday after police say he allowed an inmate to use a cellphone in exchange for a gift card.

Christopher Jimenez, 33, of Providence, is charged conveyance of unauthorized articles to and from an institution, aiding and abetting and receipt of gifts by employees of the Department of Corrections.

Rhode Island State Police Col. James Manni said Jimenez was arrested following an investigation into allegations that he allowed an inmate being held at the Intake Service Center to use his personal cell phone during the month of February. In exchange, Manni said the inmate arranged for the delivery of a gift card to a local restaurant for Jimenez.

Jimenez was arraigned by a justice of the peace and released on personal recognizance. Manni said he has been placed on administrative leave from the ACI.
