Police: Man found dead near Cranston bike path believed to be homeless

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A 61-year-old man found dead Friday in Cranston is believed to have been homeless, according to Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist.

Winquist said on Saturday that so far detectives have found no signs of foul play or suicide.

The body of Gary Merritt was found just before 4 p.m. Friday down a small embankment off Oaklawn Avenue next to the bike path.

Merritt’s death remains under investigation.
