WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after a crash left a young girl seriously injured.
According to Maj. Rick Rathbun, Anthony Sudduth was trying to take a left hand turn onto Greenwich Avenue from King Street when he lost control of his vehicle.
Eyewitness News crews on the scene saw a black SUV on the grass in the park with an air bag deployed.
Rathbun said the girl was riding a scooter on the sidewalk when she was hit by the SUV. She was transported to the hospital with “serious injuries.”
Sudduth, 47, was arrested on the scene for suspicion of driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs. He is being charged with one count of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and the DUI investigation is ongoing.
Rathbun called the incident a frustrating scenario.
“We’re trying to get a constant message out to the community, ‘Don’t drink and drive,'” Rathbun said. “This is a classic example of why we stress that and why we are aggressive in our DUI enforcement activities.”
