1 dead, 3 hurt in head-on Cranston crash

West Bay

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Cranston police believe alcohol and speed contributed to a crash Thursday night that claimed the life of an East Providence man.

The crash took place around 11:30 p.m. on Atwood Avenue. According to Chief Michael Winquist, a car driven by Louis A. Costa was traveling north in the southbound lane and hit an SUV head-on.

Costa, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene, Winquist said, while the SUV’s driver and two passengers were taken to area hospitals with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A witness told police Costa was heading southbound and riding on a rim, having blown a tire, when he turned around and started heading north at a high rate of speed. It was then his car crossed the center line and crashed into the SUV.

Winquist said the crash remains under investigation.
