WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Two people were rushed to the hospital Friday after a car drove through the outdoor seating area at Tommy’s Clam Shack in Warwick.
Police tell 12 News a woman was driving through the parking lot when she “inadvertently hit the accelerator” and hit two people sitting at a picnic table outside the Warwick Avenue eatery.
Frank Howard was sitting nearby when he saw the vehicle barreling towards the restaurant.
“I heard the gravel and this car coming through,” Howard recalled. “[The car] came right by my table … it missed our table by two or three feet, and went right into the table in front of us. It smashed one table and then took the two victims with them.”
Police said a woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A man was also brought to the hospital with injuries where he is listed in stable condition.
Tommy’s Clam Shack has closed for the day, and an employee speaking on behalf of the business said their hearts go out to the victims.
It’s unclear at this time whether the driver will be charged. The crash remains under investigation.
