Avedisian: State of politics factored into my decision to leave post

West Bay

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Longtime Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian announced this week he’s leaving his post to take the reins of the cash-strapped Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA).

Avedisian said the current state of politics was a factor in his decision. The state’s most high-profile moderate Republican admitted the party has changed a lot from when he first started.

“It is more and more difficult to see what goes on in this uncivilized world of politics today, and it was time to step back and do something a little differently,” Avedisian said during this week’s taping of WPRI’s Newsmakers.

Avedisian said his last day on the job at Warwick City Hall will likely be May 15.

Host Tim White has more in the video above, and you can watch the entire interview with Avedisian here.
