2 dead in early-morning crash on Warwick highway

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Two people were killed and two others were injured following an early morning highway crash in Warwick.

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. Sunday on I-95 North near Exit 10, when a vehicle went off the road and struck a tree. Rhode Island State Police said the driver and passenger were dead when rescue crews arrived.

According to police, the driver was ejected from the vehicle. Two back-seat passengers were taken to Rhode Island Hospital and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Police are not releasing the victims’ names, only saying that all four are from Massachusetts and were returning home when the crash happened.

Police are investigating whether a lack of sleep, fatigue or speed were contributing factors to the crash.
