EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a suspected road rage incident involving a hatchet led to the arrest of two brothers.

According to police, the incident started around 6 p.m. Sunday with a minor accident between two vehicles on the highway near the New London Turnpike.

One vehicle with two men inside, later identified as Matthew Toneatti, 31, and Cody Toneatti, 29, began following the other and ended up at the McDonald’s off Exit 7.

Police say both men then got out and Cody began striking the other vehicle with a hatchet, causing some damage.

Cody admitted to breaking the rear window of the vehicle with the hatchet, according to police.

There were two children inside the vehicle with the damaged window, police confirmed to 12 News.

Both men were arrested on disorderly conduct charges and Cody was additionally charged with causing malicious damage to the other vehicle.

The two men were released later in the evening and are due in court July 12.
