(WPRI) – For the first time in decades, the URI Rams and Providence College Friars are going dancing in the same season.
The URI men’s basketball team is headed back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1999.
The Rams beat VCU 70-63 to win the Atlantic 10 title in Pittsburgh to secure an automatic bid to the big dance.
It’s a timely surge for the Rams, who dropped Davidson by 24 points Saturday afternoon.
The Rams got the 11th seed and is set to play Creighton, a 6-seed, Friday in Sacramento, Calif.
While URI got an automatic bid, Providence College had to wait until the selection show Sunday night.
The Friars will play USC Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio.
Meanwhile, coach Ed Cooley and the Providence College Friars, ranked third in the Big East, will be waiting to see if they get invited to the big dance – a prospect which seems likely.
