The New Shoreham Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to eliminate the sale, distribution, and use of all balloons on Block Island, according to the Block Island Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.

The Council voted 5-0 to approve and enforce a general ordinance to ban balloons on the island that will go into effect on Monday, April 9.

The ordinance will carry up to a $200 fine enforced by the New Shoreham Police Department, and adjudicated by the Warden’s Court.

The Town Council’s decision came after the refuse of discarded balloons — none of which are biodegradable — became an issue of trash to the Block Island community and the surrounding ecosystem. Floating paper “wish” lanterns are also prohibited by state law, the Chamber of Commerce posting said.
