LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) — More than two dozen kids from across the state gathered at Lincoln Middle School Saturday to test their spelling prowess in Rhode Island’s Spelling Bee Championship.

But only one will head to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Alice Dunning, 12, a sixth-grader at Wickford Middle School, clinched the win by correctly spelling “Kelvin,” a noun, defined as the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature, equal in magnitude to the degree Celsius.

She’ll now represent Rhode Island at nationals in May.

Eyewitness News reporter Kim Kalunian was the official pronouncer at Saturday’s event.
