NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a Hartford police officer was arrested on Block Island over the weekend, 12 News has learned.

In a statement, the Hartford Police Department said it was notified by Rhode Island State Police that officer Justin Damone was taken into custody following an incident at Ballard’s Beach Resort on Saturday.

Damone has been charged with sexual assault, according to the department.

Though the department didn’t elaborate on the incident in question, it did confirm Damone was off duty at the time.

Damone, who is a four-year veteran of the department, has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the internal and criminal investigations.

In a statement to 12 News, Ballard’s Beach Resort owner Steven Filippi said a female patron notified their security team that a man had inappropriately touched her.

Filippi said the security team immediately intervened and called police.

“Ballard’s — which employs a full-time team of trained security professionals led by a former police chief — has zero tolerance for any behavior that could affect the safety or well-being of guests or staff,” Filippi said. “We will continue to cooperate fully with state and local law enforcement as they investigate this allegation.”

Damone was arraigned Tuesday and released on $25,000 surety bail pending his next court date, which is scheduled for Nov. 21.

12 News has reached out to Rhode Island State Police for more information but has not yet heard back.
