Fire damages apartments at North Kingstown complex

South County

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — It took about 20 minutes for crews to knock down a fire that broke out Friday afternoon at an apartment complex in North Kingstown, according to an official on scene.

Deputy Fire Chief John Batzinger said the call came in around 4 p.m. for a fire at Saw Mill Square. Mutual aid was called in from several neighboring communities.

A number of residents had to evacuate once the fire alarms went off.

“It was scary at first, and I started to think if this was at night, I wouldn’t have made it out,” Nicole Kennedy said. “We had to get out fast. Everyone was coming out.”

No injuries were reported but the building sustained damage. Four of the apartments were deemed uninhabitable by the building inspector, according to Batzinger.

The cause of the fire is now being investigated.
