TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) — Three workers were injured after a chemical explosion inside a Taunton industrial facility early Sunday morning.

Fire crews were called to IQE, located at 200 John Hancock Road just before 12:30 a.m. for a report of an explosion inside the plant.

When they arrived, they found the three employees suffering from flash burns on their faces and hands. Firefighters were also notified about the possibility that hazardous materials were released into the air.

As a result, a Tier 2 Hazardous Materials Response was requested, bringing in resources, personnel and equipment from around the region.

Officials on scene determined the incident involved compressed hydrogen and arsine and that none of the materials were released into the air.

At the time of the explosion, the equipment was undergoing maintenance.

The three employees that were injured were taken to Morton Hospital, where they were treated and released. No firefighters were injured.

The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
