Roads to be closed for Brayton Point implosion

SE Mass

SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) — Police will be closing multiple roads to traffic early Saturday morning ahead of the implosion of the Brayton Point cooling towers in Somerset, in addition to parking restrictions that will begin at midnight earlier that day.

The on-ramps to I-195 from Route 103 and Lee’s River Avenue/Wilbur Avenue will be closed, according to a department news release Tuesday.

Three sections of road will also be limited to local traffic only, with residents being required to show identification after closure:

  • Route 103 (Wilbur Avenue) in both directions between Alden Place, Somerset and Gardner’s Neck Road, Swansea, with traffic diverted north to Route 6
  • Brayton Point Road from Route 6 south to Wilbur Avenue
  • Lee’s River Avenue from Route 6 south to Wilbur Avenue

Brayton Point Road is also part of the many streets listed for parking bans between midnight and noon Saturday, as police announced last week.

The time of the detonation itself will be approximately 8 a.m. Two minutes before the event, two long sirens will blast in warning, and one minute before, a series of short sirens will sound. About five minutes after the towers are felled, one long siren blast will be sounded to indicate all clear, and the roads and waterways will begin to be reopened, according to officials. It will take less than 10 seconds for the towers to fall.

In case of rain or other bad weather, the backup date is Sunday.
