FREETOWN, Mass. (WPRI) — Police believe a man walking his dog Sunday afternoon robbed a Freetown man while assaulting him in the process.

The victim told police he’d just parked his vehicle in his driveway on East Public Street about 3:30 p.m. He said the man walking his dog went up to the passenger side door of the car, saw cash lying on the seat, opened the door, and grabbed the cash.

The victim tried to grab the cash back, but police said the suspect punched the victim in the head.

Police said once the suspect was no longer in the vehicle, the victim locked the doors and called 911, as the suspect then started to punch and kick the vehicle.

Officers arrested the man, 54-year-old Steven Bernard, and charged him with unarmed robbery, assault and battery, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and disorderly conduct.
