Police: K9 Nero has fully recovered after shooting

Nero visits Yarmouth PD

YARMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) — Nero, the police K9 who was wounded when his partner was shot to death back in April, has fully recovered from his injuries.

The Yarmouth Police Department made the announcement on its Facebook page Thanksgiving morning.

Nero “is enjoying his retirement from police service back home living with the Gannon Family,” the department wrote.

Sergeant Sean Gannon and Nero were among several officers trying to serve a warrant on Thomas Latanowich at Latanowich’s home in Barnstable on April 12 when they were ambushed. Latanowich is accused of hiding in an attic and shooting both Gannon and Nero when they discovered his hiding place.

Gannon died at a nearby hospital while Nero, two years old at the time of the shooting, suffered serious wounds.

Latanowich, 30, was indicted on nine criminal charges and remains held without bail pending his next court date.
