NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Officials say one person was killed in an early morning car crash in New Bedford on Saturday.

According to Bristol County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Gregg Milliote, sometime after 2 a.m., a woman was on the shoulder of the road on Rt. 140 northbound, and outside of her vehicle “for reasons unknown.”

Milliote says the woman, identified as Joy Swartzendruber, 45, of Assonet, Mass., was struck when a Ford F-150 appears to have sideswiped her Toyota Avalon when she was still outside of it.

Massachusetts State Police were called to the scene around 2:45 a.m., where Milliote says the woman was pronounced dead on scene.

According to Milliote, the driver of the truck, identified as a 50 year-old New Bedford man, was cooperative with police and did not appear to be intoxicated.

The state police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS) unit is in the middle of the accident reconstruction process, and have seized the driver’s vehicle as a part of that investigation.

Milliote says the driver’s name is not being released pending the reconstruction process, which will determine if charges need to be filed.
