BELLINGHAM, Mass. (WPRI) – Five students and a driver escaped unharmed after their school bus caught fire Wednesday afternoon in Bellingham.

Fire Department Captain Joseph Robidoux said it happened at about 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of Caroline Drive and North Main Street. He said the fire started in the bus’s engine compartment and spread to the cab and seating area.

The driver and the students, from Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, all got off the bus before the fire department arrived and were not hurt.

Robidoux said it appears a mechanical problem caused the fire.
