Former coal plant to be known as ‘Brayton Point Commerce Center’

SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) — To reflect its departure from burning coal for energy, the new owners of the Brayton Point Power Station are rebranding the campus as the “Brayton Point Commerce Center.”

With the announcement of the new name, a new website and brand-new logo Friday, owners Commercial Development Company said they hope to set up Brayton Point to become a significant logistics port, manufacturing hub and support center for offshore wind energy.

Through what it calls an “affiliate” company, Brayton Point LLC, Commercial Development Company purchased the 308-acre property back in January. Asbestos and other waste and contamination also had to be removed. Then, about a month ago, they started demolishing old buildings and fuel oil tanks for the 50-year-old coal-fired power plant.

The new Brayton Point Commerce Center website is designed to feature updates on the plans for new development at the campus. That website’s “redevelopment timeline” says the massive cooling towers that have long been a part of the SouthCoast skyline will be imploded in Spring 2019.
