Fire rips through Westport home, causing $350K in damage

WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — A Westport home has been deemed a total loss following a fire on Thursday.

According to the Westport fire officials, the department did not immediately receive the report of the fire. Officials say the homeowner called 911 from his cellphone, which automatically rerouted the call to Massachusetts State Police, who in turn notified the fire department.

When crews arrived at the Charlotte White Road Ext. scene, the one-story home was already engulfed in flames. Officials say due to the location of the home and lack of nearby fire hydrants, mutual aid from several nearby communities was called in.

In addition, firefighters had to deal with a live electrical line that fell from the house and landed in the driveway.

Due to these delays, the fire extended to the basement and attic, causing approximately $350,000 in damage.

The homeowner was treated for minor injuries on scene. No firefighters were hurt.

Officials believe the fire was accidental. The American Red Cross is now assisting the couple that lived there.
