SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) — Fire crews are trying to determine what sparked a fire that destroyed a garage at a Seekonk home Tuesday morning.

According to Fire Chief Michael Healy, when crews arrived on scene at 512 Central Ave. around 9:15 a.m., they found heavy fire coming from the garage and starting to spread to the main house – which is connected by a breezeway.

Healy said people were home when the fire started. The son began to investigate after smelling smoke and when he tried to enter the garage he encountered smoke and fire.

Healy said the son, his mother and their family dog were able to escape.

The son was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with smoke inhalation, Healy said. No firefighters were hurt.

While the house is not a total loss, Healy said it’s currently uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
