FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Police have a suspect in custody after a Fall River teenager was stabbed to death Wednesday night, according to the office of Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.
The 16-year-old from Fall River was arrested Thursday evening in West Warwick and will be charged with murder in the death of William Wheeler, 17, the DA's office said.
The suspect has not been identified, due to being a juvenile.
Police responded just before midnight Wednesday to a fight at a Fountain Street apartment. They arrived to find Wheeler suffering from an apparent stab wound.
Wheeler was rushed to St. Anne's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:42 a.m., according to the DA's office.
The homicide remains under investigation.
"He made me really happy. I wish I could say bye to him," Rozilynn Haston said Thursday.
Haston was Wheeler's girlfriend of three years. She said her home is full of memories of him, including his sweatshirt, which she was wearing on Thursday.
"He just got me some Valentine's Day gifts, I didn’t open them yet," she said. "He wanted to wait for my reaction."
Haston said she has no idea why her boyfriend was killed, noting that Wheeler was an innocent person with a loving heart.
Wheeler meant a lot to many people, according to Haston, including his sister and three brothers.
"He loved his little brothers so much and his sister, he loved his sister," she said. "They had a really good bond."
"He was my heart. He was such a good person," she added.
Fall River Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Malone released a statement Thursday saying Wheeler was a student of Resiliency Preparatory Academy. He said grief counselors will be available at the school from 12:30-3 p.m. Friday.
