FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A medical marijuana dispensary located near the Rhode Island border may begin selling recreational marijuana as soon as this weekend.
Northeast Alternatives currently sells medical cannabis at its location on William S. Canning Boulevard in Fall River.
The company was issued a provisional license for retail marijuana sales in September, indicating in their application they would be able to start retail sales within three months. In December, the company received its final retail license.
According to Northeast Alternatives, the Cannabis Control Commission has scheduled the store’s final inspection for Wednesday. Following the inspection, there is a minimum of three days before the store can begin selling recreationally.
It’s unclear at this time if the store will in fact begin selling marijuana for recreational use this weekend.
Once it does, it will be the closest dispensary to Rhode Island, with Northeast Alternatives’ operation just over the border from Tiverton.
The first two marijuana retail shops in Massachusetts opened in Leicester and Northampton in November, causing major traffic jams as customers and tourists came from all over to visit the stores.
Northeast Alternatives is taking preventative measures against this by creating an easy way for customers to order online prior to picking it up in store.
The company said they will be posting more details on its website.
