SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) — A Cranston man died Thursday following a serious crash on I-195 in Swansea.

On Thursday afternoon the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as 38-year-old John Souza.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the initial investigation revealed an SUV traveling eastbound crossed the median into the westbound travel lanes just after 2 a.m. and struck an oncoming Jeep. The Jeep rolled over and burst into flames as a result, with Souza trapped inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 40-year-old Bristol woman, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and was in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon, according to the Bristol County DA’s Office. Her identity is not being released at this time.

The highway was completely closed to traffic at Exit 3 for more than four hours while crews worked to clear the scene. One lane was reopened just after 6:30, with all lanes open for travel a little before 7 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. It’s unclear if the woman will be facing any charges.
