PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WPRI) — A 23-year-old man has died after crashing into an embankment off I-495 in Plainville, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Troopers responding to the southbound side of the highway around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday found the car in several feet of water and the driver’s side engulfed in flames.

The driver, identified as Sage Woodward of Pawtucket, was found in the passenger side of the car face down in the water as troopers worked to extinguish the fire.

Two Good Samaritans helped the troopers pull Woodward out of the vehicle and up to a higher part of the embankment.

Woodward was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

One trooper suffered a cut to his hand and was treated at the hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
