ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A Somerville man is facing felony charges for allegedly causing “extensive damage” at a Hobby Lobby store, according to Attleboro police.
The incident took place shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday in the plaza off Newport Avenue.
Witnesses told police the driver crashed into the doors, backed up several feet, then rammed through the doors and began “driving within the store.”
After reviewing the surveillance footage, police said they determined the act was intentional.
Responding officers found a license plate inside the store, according to police, and the suspect vehicle was stopped a short time later on Newport Avenue in the area of Roy Avenue.
The driver, identified only as a 36-year-old man, was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
Police said he’ll be arraigned at a later date on charges of destruction of property over $1,200, breaking and entering a building in the nighttime, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of a crash after causing property damage.
While the inside of the Hobby Lobby was heavily damaged, police said the building inspector determined the building is structurally safe.
