Attleboro crash victim: ‘I’m blessed to be with my kids this Mother’s Day’

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) -— Mother’s Day this year will be extra special for one local mom who is still recovering from a serious car crash in Attleboro last month.

Katherine Ibanez, a 31-year-old mother of two, was heading out to run a few errands on April 3, when she says she swerved to avoid another car and lost control on Parker Street. Ibanez crashed into a chain-link fence. A 12-foot fence pole pierced her windshield and went through her arm, chest, and back, but she survived.

“Now I know why they can say everything can change in the blink of an eye,” Ibanez said.

Doctors told Ibanez they could not believe she survived the crash. Five weeks later, Ibanez still has bandages over her wounds and has to attend physical therapy for another six months.

“I feel overwhelmed at times, I can’t help my family the way I want to,” Ibanez said.

Ibanez said she has her inspiration every morning to keep her going: her children.

“It’s beautiful to have kids,” Ibanez said. “I had a chance to die and not see my kids again.”

Ibanez has two girls, 11 and 9 years old. She said she’s a proud mom and this Mother’s Day she will be beaming because she’s there when she knows she easily might not have been.

“This one, there’s going to be a lot of laughter, that’s what I told them,” Ibanez said. “I want to laugh a lot, go to the park and just enjoy what I have because tomorrow’s never promised.”

Ibanez said she won’t take the day for granted.

“I’m blessed I get to be with my daughters on Mother’s Day,” Ibanez said.

According to Ibanez, life is slowly returning to normal for her. She just started driving for the first time since the accident. She said as life gets back to normal, her newfound perspective will not change.
