Five people were able to escape from a burning home early Saturday morning after fire started around 3 a.m. at their home on Hope Street.
“I heard the alarms going off and my second door neighbor, she was screaming and yelling ‘fire fire’,” says first floor resident Maria Paiva.
She could hear her neighbor trying to get others up.
“She was jumping off the stairs like crazy, she says it’s bad,” adds Paiva.
According to the Fall River Fire Department, everyone inside made it out, but five people were taken to the hospital. Others were forced outside in the chill April morning.
“I’m outside in the cold in my pajamas and that’s a very bad feeling because you don’t know what’s going on in the inside,” she says.
Paiva adds there was a similar scene outside her home just two years ago on Christmas. That time, a dumpster fire had spread the building. “My first floor had damage, my windows, my living room got damaged, my couch.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
