NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Three families were forced from their homes after a triple-decker caught fire in New Bedford early Sunday morning.

Fire officials say it happened on Shaw Street around 3:30 a.m. They cleared the scene four hours later around 7:30 a.m.

According to District Fire Chief David Cooper, one firefighter suffered a minor burn injury. Cooper says three families totaling 14 people, including five children, have been displaced. None of the residents were hurt.

Cooper says there is heavy fire damage to the third floor. According to Cooper, crews rescued a dog, but a cat died in the fire. Crews were able to knock down the flames in about 20 minutes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Cooper believes it was accidental.
