PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A homicide investigation is underway after a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in Providence Friday night.

Police said the shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. on Dexter Street near Bucklin Park.

Upon arrival, police said the boy was suffering from a gunshot to the stomach. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It’s unclear whether police have anyone in custody.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of the young victim involved in the homicide last night. It is unacceptable that firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the nation now and we need to do more to remove these deadly weapons from our streets,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said in a statement.

This is the capital city’s 8th homicide this year.
