State Police to amp up patrols during St. Patrick’s Day weekend

Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are asking those who plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this weekend to do so safely and responsibly.

Rhode Island State Police Col. James Manni said additional troopers will be out during the weekend to ensure drivers are following the rules of the road.

“The number of traffic-related deaths historically spikes on St. Patrick’s Day, so we have added extra patrols to help keep our roadways safe,” Manni said. “But we can’t do it alone. We need your help, too. Don’t drink and drive.”

Manni said those celebrating the holiday should consider alternative modes of transportation, whether that be by designating a sober driver, utilizing ride-sharing services or taking public transit.

“Celebrate responsibly so we can all get home safely,” Manni said. “We all play a role in keeping our roadways safe.”

The Warwick Police Department is once again taking a proactive approach by offering free rides to residents for the fifth consecutive year.
