State police arrest driver in fatal Route 6 crash

Alpha Williams

Rhode Island State Police have arrested the driver they said crashed his car following a police pursuit on Route 6, which resulted in the death of his passenger who was ejected from the car.

Alpha Williams, 47, of Cranston, was arrested Thursday on a felony charge of driving to endanger, resulting in death.

Police said Williams fled a traffic stop around 7 p.m. Tuesday before he crashed his car into a guardrail on an off-ramp near Hartford Avenue on Route 6. The crash killed his passenger, 47-year-old David Johnson of Providence.

Police said Williams had to be extricated from the car, while Johnson was ejected from the car during the crash. Both were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where Johnson later died from his injuries.

Police said Williams was apprehended without incident. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Sixth Division District Court.
