It’s official: Shake Shack will be coming to Providence in 2019.

A spokesperson for the restaurant chain said it plans to open a location at 249 Thayer St., in Brown University’s new Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, across the street from the school’s bookstore.

Shake Shack is a burger joint that first opened back in 2004 in New York City. Since then, the company has opened more than 90 locations nationwide and acquired a devoted fan base.

Currently, there are no Shake Shack locations in Rhode Island, with the closest ones being in Dedham, Massachusetts, and New Haven, Connecticut.

The company said it plans to use recycled and sustainable materials to build its Providence restaurant, with booths being made from lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and tabletops made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes.

The news was first reported by The Brown Daily Herald.
