PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) recognized its class of 2019 and social justice during a commencement ceremony at the Rhode Island Convention Center Saturday.
Degrees were awarded to 486 undergraduates and 213 graduate students at its 136th Commencement.
The school also presented four honorary degrees to “visionaries in contemporary culture.”
Public interest lawyer and civil rights leader Bryan Stevenson joined author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, artist Theaster Gates and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova on the stage.
Tolokonnikova is the co-founder of Russian punk collective Pussy Riot, and whose public performance protesting the Putin-led Russian government led to a two-year imprisonment.
