PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police announced the outcome of a months-long undercover investigation into the distribution of illegal narcotics at Kennedy Plaza on Thursday.

Col. Oscar Perez and Mayor Brett Smiley said 25 suspects are facing charges including unlawful delivery of cocaine and conspiracy. Over the past three months, undercover officers purchased drugs from each of the individuals, who range in age from 23 to 56, according to Perez.

Smiley said 19 of the suspects have been arrested, while police have arrest warrants out for the remaining six. Seventeen of them of Providence residents.

Smiley said transit riders, employers, employees, and students use the bus hub every day, but many have felt unsafe there.

There will be an increased public safety presence in the area, Perez said, and the investigation remains active.

Perez noted that Providence is dealing with an opioid overdose crisis that has impacted the most vulnerable members of the community.

The announcement came on the same day as International Overdose Awareness Day.
