PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Members of the Providence Police Department gathered Friday to honor fallen officers, as well as active and retired officers who died last year.

The annual Peace Officers’ Memorial Service and Wreath-Laying Ceremony was held at the city’s public safety complex.

“The loss of these officers is not just a loss for the families but for Providence as a whole,” Mayor Brett Smiley said. “They were dedicated public servants who worked tirelessly to keep us safe, and their legacy will live on with family, friends and colleagues, and the community they served with distinction.”

“These heroes gave the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives serving the community in a courageous manner,” Chief Oscar Perez added.

The event was part of the department’s observation of National Police Week.
