Providence police officer involved in rollover crash

Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating the cause of a crash that sent two people to the hospital Friday, including a Providence police officer.

According to Providence Police Col. Hugh Clements, the officer was pulling a vehicle over just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Portland and Pine Streets when another car struck the cruiser head on.

The impact of the crash caused the cruiser to roll over and land on its tires. Clements said it’s unclear at this time if the officer had his lights and siren on when he was pursuing the other vehicle.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged, according to Clements, and the airbags deployed in both.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The officer has since been treated and released from the hospital. The condition of the female driver in the second vehicle is unknown at this time.
