Providence police ID victims in double drive-by shooting

Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) Providence police are investigating after a drive-by, double-shooting in Providence late Wednesday night.

According to Providence police, the shooting happened on Touro Street around 10:15 p.m.

Two people — Shawn Chalmers, 25 and Jean Sajous, 26 — were shot. One was shot once in the leg, the other was shot twice.

Both men were taken to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police tell Eyewitness News, after the shooting, people who were with the victims jumped into their own car and started chasing the suspect’s vehicle.

A few blocks away, at the intersection of Branch Avenue and Chatham Street, a third vehicle not involved in the shooting crashed into the suspect’s van, causing it to spin out.

The driver of the third car told police they saw two to three people jump out of the van and run away.

Police arrested a 25-year-old suspect at the scene who they said went back to the van to try an retrieve his cell phone. They have not confirmed what, if any, charges this person will face.

Police tell Eyewitness News they believe this was a targeted attack, and it appears the suspects and the victims know each other.

This is a developing story. Stay with Eyewitness News as new information comes in.
