Providence gearing up for New Year’s Eve celebration

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In just a few days, thousands of people are expected to crowd downtown Providence, for the state’s first-ever ball drop.

Skyline at Waterplace Park once again won the bid to host Providence’s outdoor New Year’s Eve celebration.

“We had over 5,000 people in negative 10 degrees! So this year it’s looking like the low may be around 40, so I’m looking at a 50 degree swing… so I may be in shorts myself,” Skyline CEO Michael Mota said.

Mota expects twice as many people to come out to the free event in the milder temperatures. While he’s hoping for dry skies, he says the venue is prepared for rain.

“We have tents outside, you know people come down. I mean rain’s not going to bother anybody. I’d rather have rain in the 50s than negative 10 degrees, trust me on that,” Mota said.

The stage has already been covered so live music will continue as planned. Mota said there will also be food trucks, fireworks and Rhode Island’s first-ever LED ball drop.

“New Year’s Eve happens one time a year so this is it, so it may rain, a little bit showers, we’re prepared, you prepare,” Mota said. “Obviously 40 degree weather a nice little jacket, an umbrella, we’re not time square yet so we can have umbrellas. Just come down, I mean this is it, this is one time a year you get to celebrate, rain doesn’t hurt anyone.”

Providence firefighters are also helping you celebrate responsibly, offering free rides home to anyone out in the city.
