PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police are investigating a “sophisticated, planned heist” at a bank on Federal Hill early Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the Santander Bank on Atwells Avenue around 2 a.m. with a tactical approach using large weapons and shields.

Deputy Chief Kevin Lanni said that is a common response to bank break-ins because those types of crimes are usually accompanied by a threat of or the presence of a firearm.

However, no one was on scene when officers arrived.

A “significant” amount of money was stolen after the vault inside the bank was breached, according to police.

Police are now working to identify and track down the suspects.

This branch is temporarily closed and customers are directed to go to the bank’s Smith Street location.
