PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating following a stabbing at a restaurant on Federal Hill Sunday night.

Police said officers were called to Lucia’s Mexican Restaurant on Atwells Avenue just after 11 p.m. When they arrived on scene, they found a cook inside the restaurant suffering from a stab wound to the upper left part of his chest.

The cook, identified by police as Edgar Morales, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Police said several witnesses told police the suspect ordered a beer. However, because the man had previous issues with intoxication, he was refused service.

Witnesses told police that is when the suspect pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the restaurant’s owner. When Morales attempted to intervene, he was stabbed instead, police said.

Police said the suspect took off on Bond Street towards Federal Street.

At this point, it is unclear if he’s is in custody.
