Police: Boxing champion arrested for carrying gun without permit

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Middleweight boxing world champion Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade was arrested Thursday after police said they caught him with a handgun in his car.

According to Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin, two officers were driving down Coggeshall Street around 2:30 a.m. when they saw Andrade's Mercedes pulled over and blocking traffic.

Police said Andrade was sitting in the driver's seat talking to his friend who was pulled over in another Mercedes.

When police began questioning him, Andrade appeared nervous and repeatedly glanced at a Louis Vuitton handbag inside his car. Police said one of the officers then opened the bag and found a Glock 19 pistol and a magazine with 10 rounds.

Police said Andrade, 30, told officers he carried the pistol to protect himself because of his fame and wealth. Andrade currently holds the World Boxing Organization middleweight championship.

According to police, Andrade didn't have a permit to carry the pistol and was arrested.

Andrade is facing one felony count of carrying a pistol without a license. He was arraigned Thursday afternoon and released.
