Police arrest suspect in Providence nightclub shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Police believe they have arrested the man who shot someone in the chest inside a Providence nightclub back in September.

Herby Paul of Lawrence, Mass., was positively identified by Providence police and subsequently arrested in Miami, Florida on Tuesday.

Police believe Paul, 23, shot a man in the chest at Ultra the Nightclub on Pine Street back on Sept. 29.

According to police, officers found the victim just outside the entrance of the nightclub around 1:30 a.m. Police said the man was shot at least 50 feet past the metal detectors.

In an emergency meeting that same day, the Board of Licenses voted to close the club. The matter was taken up again at a meeting on Wednesday, but the board decided to extend the club's closure as police conduct their investigation.

It's unclear at this time how the gun made it inside the club and past the metal detectors. Paul is being held for extradition on a charge of attempted murder.
